A native of Nine Mile, Jamaica, he rose to global prominence by taking the sounds of his homeland to every corner of the earth, defining Jamaican identity and culture through his music. He began his journey as a founding member of the Wailers, where he was instrumental in evolving the sounds of ska and rocksteady into the deep, rhythmic pulse of reggae. Beyond being an entertainer, he was a spiritual leader and a revolutionary social activist who used his international platform to fight for democratic reforms and Pan-Africanism.
